Incurring Penalty Points on your Driving Licence

There are many motoring offences for which your driving licence can be endorsed with penalty points. Of these, speeding tickets are the most common. Call us today on 0800 840 4929.

If you incur a total of 12 points on your licence for offences occurring within a three year period you are liable to disqualification for a minimum period of six months on the first occasion, and longer if you have previously been disqualified, unless you can advance arguments in exceptional hardship. This is known as totting up.

A penalty points disqualification removes all existing penalty points from your driving licence so once you resume driving after the period of disqualification you can effectively start again from zero. All other disqualifications do not “wipe the slate clean”, with the points remaining on your driving licence following the period of disqualification.

An allegation that an offence has been committed does not necessarily have to lead to a conviction. It still falls to the police and the prosecution to prove the offence.

Do not simply accept the contents of a Notice of Intended Prosecution or a summons, call our solicitors now and we will ensure the best possible outcome for you.
