Nose Re-Shaping (Rhinoplasty)

Nose re-shaping compensation claims

Nose re-shaping or rhinoplasty is an operation to alter the shape of the nose. It can either make the nose smaller (reduction rhinoplasty), or larger (augmentation rhinoplasty).

The operation is usually done as a day case under general anaesthesia.

Reduction rhinoplasty

The procedure involves alteration of the shape of the nose by removing bone and/or cartilage. The skin over the nose is not altered. The procedure may also require a cut to be made to the skin between the nostrils. This is called open rhinoplasty. It may also be necessary to make the patient’s nostrils smaller to keep their features in proportion.

Augmentation

The procedure involves re-shaping of the bone and cartilage in the nose. Extra bone or cartilage (a graft) may also be needed to build up the nose. Cartilage can be taken from the patient’s ears or bone from the back of the elbow, a rib, skull or hip bone. Sometimes artificial implants are used instead.

Some of the more serious complications of rhinoplasty include:

  • stiffness or numbness
  • changes in the shape of the nose as scar tissue matures
  • damage to the septum

Surgeons must give the patient reasonable information about the risks to enable the patient to give valid consent to the surgery.
