Eyelid surgery compensation claims
Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin, fat or muscle from around the eyes. The procedure can be done on the upper and lower lids at the same time or separately.
For surgery on the upper eyelids, the surgeon attempts to minimise the appearance of scarring by placing incisions within the existing lines around the eyes. Excess fat, muscle and loose skin are removed and the cut is closed using fine stitches. If only fat is removed and there is no excess skin the cut may be made inside the lower eyelids leaving no visible scar.
Some of the more serious complications of blepharoplasty include:
- damage to the surface of the eyeball or the surrounding muscles
- tightness of the eyelids which means the eyes cannot close
- haemorrhage leading to damage to the optic nerve
- uneven appearance – the eyes may not look identical and occasionally another operation is needed
Surgeons must give the patient reasonable information about the risks to enable the patient to give valid consent to the surgery.
