Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty compensation claims

Abdominoplasty or a “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic procedure used to make the abdomen firmer.

The surgery involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. This type of surgery is usually sought by patients with loose tissue after pregnancy or individuals with sagging after major weight loss.

As with all surgery, there are certain risks that may be serious or life-threatening. Severe complications such as blood clots, thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications are rare but can occur. Infections and blood clots are a serious potential risk after a tummy tuck but are also quite rare. Other complications can include skin necrosis, where the blood supply to the tissue is damaged, leading to tissue death. Necrotic tissue needs to be removed surgically to allow healing to take place. A common complication associated with tummy tucks is a collection of clear fluid under the skin, a seroma. The fluid will need to be aspirated by the surgeon with a needle before further complications occur.

Surgeons must give the patient reasonable information about the risks to enable the patient to give valid consent to the surgery.
