How is contact dermatitis diagnosed?

Before you make a dermatitis claim it is important to determine the cause of your dermatitis which means that you should see your doctor promptly.

If your dermatitis is worse during the week the substance causing it may be found in your workplace. The part of your body that is affected by the rash can also help to investigate the cause.

Sometimes you may undergo what is known as a patch test which can help to determine if you have developed an allergy to a particular substance.  The test involves the application of different substances to your skin which are then left in place for 48 hours.  Your skin is then examined a further 48 hours later to see if there has been any reaction.  This can help the doctor decide what, if any, substances you have developed an allergy to and/or identify those substances aggravating your dermatitis.
