What asbestos related diseases can I claim compensation for?

There are a number of asbestos related diseases for which compensation is available. Pannone can help you with your asbestos compensation claim.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen caused by exposure to asbestos dust.  It is rare and develops many years after the asbestos dust has been inhaled.  For more information visit mesothelioma compensation claims.

Lung Cancer

Heavy exposure to asbestos dust is known to increase the risk of lung cancer.  Lung cancer can also be caused by smoking and this can make these claims difficult to prove. Usually to succeed the person will have also had to have been diagnosed with asbestosis or exposed to enough asbestos dust to cause asbestosis.

Asbestosis

This is a severe form of scarring of the lungs and can only be caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos dust.

Pleural Thickening

This is scarring of the lining of the lung which can cause breathing difficulties.  To claim compensation the pleural thickening would usually have to be what doctors call ‘diffuse’ pleural thickening.

Pleural Plaques

Pleural plaques are scarring of the lungs.  They rarely cause any symptoms but they are a marker of asbestos exposure.  It is no longer possible to make a civil compensation claim for pleural plaques.

There is a one off government compensation scheme, details of which can be found on the Ministry of Justice website or by telephoning them on 0300 3038150.

There are strict criteria under the scheme and so not everyone who has pleural plaques will be eligible for a payment.
