Estate valuations
Before you can apply for the Grant, you have to obtain precise values of the assets in the estate and any liabilities as they stood at the date of death.
Sometimes it can be difficult to obtain precise figures, in which case you can include estimate values as long as you make it clear they are estimates. If in doubt and if it is cost-effective, it is safer to have assets valued professionally. Don't forget to consider realistically the value of the deceased's personal effects. HM Revenue and Customs has been taking greater interest in the value of personal effects and a simple statement that they only carried sentimental value is unlikely to be accepted without query.
