Grant of Probate/Grant of Letters of Administration
A Grant is a form of authority from the court that entitles the personal representative to collect in/sell assets of the deceased person, pay off their debts and distribute the residue of the estate to the beneficiaries.
If you are the executor under a will, you will be applying for a Grant of Probate. If there is no will, you will be applying for a Grant of Letters of Administration. Once you have the Grant, it doesn't make any difference which type of Grant it is. However, only an executor under a will has authority before the Grant is obtained. For example, an executor can sell personal effects of the deceased before he has the Grant of Probate but someone applying for a Grant of Letters of Administration cannot do this until they have the Grant.
