How can I prevent a child abduction?
If there is a concern that a child may be taken out of this country, it is essential that you act quickly.
There are various preventative measures available. These include:
- surrender of the child and / or parent’s passport – by agreement, or by order of the court
- placing restrictions on contact – for example, insisting that contact is supervised
- notifying the Passport Agency or Embassy – to prevent further passports being issued for the child
- court order preventing removal – a prohibited steps order
- a port alert – to notify all ports and airports that there is a real and imminent risk of child abduction
- security – in cases where the child needs to travel, but there is a concern they will not be returned, it may be possible to obtain a form of security, such as a bond or a charge over property. This will be forfeit by the child abductor if the child is not returned
