Media access to the family courts - how this can affect you
Since 27th April 2009, accredited media representatives have been allowed to attend certain hearings in the family courts which were previously held in private.
Despite the flurry of publicity leading up to this change, and fear that the privacy of family law hearings would be lost, in reality it seems that the new rules have had little or no impact upon the vast majority of family law cases, which continue to take place without the press attending.
The main issues that you need to consider are as follows:
- which members of the media are entitled to attend
- the hearings which they can attend
- when the media will be excluded
- what they can report on
