Police are worried that the popularity of cycling hero Bradley Wiggins will create a dangerous increase in cyclists on Surrey’s roads. 

My colleague Cathy Leech blogged last week about a fatal cycling accident near to the Olympic Park in London. Since then, road safety campaigners have sought to point out the lessons that can be learnt to prevent serious injury and death of Britain’s roads.

Meanwhile in the midst of Bradley Wiggins’ sporting success, cycling is expected to become ‘dangerously’ popular.  Concerns have arisen about the roads becoming congested with inexperienced cyclists creating an increase in road traffic accidents. 

Wiggo-mania

The popularity of cycling in the UK is predicted to soar after Bradley Wiggins' recent Tour de France victory.  In the last week he added to that feat with another Olympic Gold medal which has earned him a golden post box in his home village in Lancashire and postage stamp in his name.  Wiggo-mania is sweeping the nation - we may even see a new trend in the form of Wiggins-esque sideburns!
 
Of course a more direct result of the Wiggins craze is that many cyclists want to emulate him and race along the Olympic routes. Hotels and tourist attractions in Surrey have reported that they are already taking bookings for next year as cyclists travel to the site to race the same routes.
 
BBC news reported over the weekend that as a result of the excitement, Surrey Police are expecting a huge influx of cyclists onto Surrey's roads. Police urged cyclists "remember - Bradley had the roads closed. So take it easy".
 
Let’s hope that cyclists and drivers have heeded this warning and will make sure they drive carefully. Certainly, it seems with increased British success in cycling, road safety can be pushed even further into the public eye. This will greatly improve the awareness of the general public and many road safety campaigners will hope that this will result in safer roads, for drivers and cyclists alike.
