Team GB cycling hero Bradley Wiggins speaks out on cyclists’ safety

Bradley Wiggins the most successful Olympian ever and winner of 2012 Olympic Time Trial and Tour de France has called for changes in the law to prevent fatal cycling accidents.
Last night all eyes were on “Wiggo” following his gold medal-winning Olympic ride. As the champion prepared to face the press, a cyclist tragically died in a collision with a bus near the Olympic Park.
In response to this tragic fatal accident, Wiggins has appealed for changes to the law to enhance cyclists’ safety. Taking the opportunity to remind cyclists of the need to protect themselves on Britain’s roads, Wiggo pointed out “you can get killed if you don’t have a helmet on… you shouldn’t be riding along with iPods and phones and things.”

As it stands it is not compulsory for British cyclists to wear a helmet, it is a matter of individual choice. Wiggins is not alone in thinking that the law in this area is in dire need of reform. Road safety charities and friends of Pannone, Brake and Roadpeace, have long running campaigns to promote safe cycling. Brain injury charities like Headway are also supportive of compulsory cycling helmets, which can reduce the chance of suffering a serious brain injury.
As serious injury lawyers, we are all too often approached by bereaved families, left devastated by a fatal cycling accident. While we can help them cope with the sudden death of a loved one by providing legal representation and advice throughout the Inquest and civil claim process, we cannot bring their loved ones back. The statistics are alarming. In 2011 571 cyclists were fatally or seriously injured in London alone. Perhaps if the government take heed of the recommendations from the man of the moment Bradley Wiggins, fewer cyclists’ lives will be wasted.
