After suffering brain injuries in a road accident last May, John Drake has had his entire memory wiped almost completely clean.

Mr Drake survived his catastrophic injuries, caused when an elderly driver with poor vision knocked him off his bike. Nevertheless, his family were naturally left heartbroken that he was unable to recollect anything of their lives together. He could not even manage to identify them when they had gathered round his hospital bed to wish him well.

Mr Drakes’s family were informed that he may not make it and they were advised to begin saying their goodbyes as Mr Drake was induced into a coma.

However, I was pleased to read that as days went by, Mr Drake began to show tiny signs of recovery.

Two days later, he opened his eyes and over the next few days, Mr Drake was starting to show even more signs of improvement by mouthing sentences.

Even though he was improving scans showed that he had suffered considerable damage to his brain. When Mr Drake returned home after regaining his strength his wife and family set about the task of rebuilding his memory of his past, using stories and old photos to help him.

Thanks to his wife’s stories, Mr Drake is relearning his history but doctors have warned he may never fully regain his memory.

Mr Drake still has a long way to go but his story is a lesson to all that with the dedication and hope of his family he will be able to slowly rebuild his cherished memories again.
