Interestingly,  a  blogger  has this week reported interesting statistics relating to cycling accidents occurring in a sizeable area of London over the last 12 years. He reports that in one particular area there were 14 fatal cycling accidents reported all involving female riders, but no such incidents involving male cyclists.  Notably, in all but 1 of these accidents a bus or a lorry was involved.

Whilst it is not clear whether the high proportion of females involved in accidents in this area is of any significance, it does serve to highlight the danger that larger vehicles can pose to cyclists on the road and the terrible consequences that result when a collision does occur.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, reported back in July 2012 that 20% of cycling accidents in London involve HGV vehicles, caused by either a lorry turning into the path of a cyclist or passing too close to a cyclist. Unfortunately, the results for the cyclist can be catastrophic with many sustaining serious limb injuries, head injuries and chest injuries.
