Back to school….but which one?

Suri Cruise is just one of so many children starting her first day at school this week. It is not unusual following a divorce or separation for parents to disagree on how their child should be brought up. These problems can be greater where, as for TomKat, the parents cultural or religious backgrounds are different.

In England the right to be involved in decisions concerning a child’s upbringing comes from having parental responsibility which most parents have automatically or can acquire. If those with parental responsibility can’t agree on what arrangements for a child are best then the court will ultimately have to decide.

This can include which school a child should attend, their religious upbringing, whether medical treatment is appropriate and even before they are 18 whether they should be allowed to marry.

It is always better to resolve these issues without the involvement of the courts if possible and there are various alternatives to court available on which a family law solicitor would be able to advise.

If you anticipate difficulties in making arrangements for your child following your separation it is important to take advice from an expert family lawyer quickly. It is likely that this is how Katie secured Suri’s schooling for her.
