As part of their training, our trainees are involved in the Young Enterprise scheme, spending a day in a local primary school. Here is some feedback from our trainees following a day spent at a local primary school.
The day was extremely enjoyable - a complete convert to the programme! It's an intensive day (completely exhausted by the end) but incredibly rewarding for both the children and us. The children learnt about our nation (our subject topic for year 5) and how businesses work and work together.
They also worked on their presentation skills, team work, letting one another take turns in games, problem solving, and I think that towards the afternoon you could see the children's confidence growing and they were more willing to speak in front of their classmates. They loved the games and fortunately there wasn't any grumbling if one lost and the other won - they really cheered each other on. Their enthusiasm for the day was infectious and lovely to watch.
The skills that I think I picked up would be presenting, talking in front of a class - trying to keep their attention when it's almost lunch time and a sunny day. It also built up my confidence as I was incredibly nervous before and on the day. More than anything I think that it was simply a lovely day that we all enjoyed.
The programme is well run - they provide you with lots of information beforehand and even though you are left to teach the class in our groups I felt as though we were well prepared and the team were always around if we did need help.
I think it was a really beneficial day. It used good teamwork and enabled us to practice presentation skills. Also, for communication skills, it was a really good exercise to help us explain things simply! The training given by Young Enterprise was helpful. The school staff were welcoming.
The day was really enjoyable and rewarding. Skills for the day: Enthusiasm, listening skills, being able to adapt to class audience, team work. For preparation - reading the booklets and taking items from home to show the children. We took soft toys from places we have visited and different types of food (we were teaching the class about our world).
I would really recommend that all trainees participate; I think the pupils really enjoyed having new faces to interact with and they seemed to love the activities. To be honest I probably enjoyed it more than they did.
In terms of skills, I felt that teamwork was an important one because it was up to us to divide the five lessons of the day between the groups in which we were put and generally work together to teach the children and keep their attention. For development it was a good confidence builder because it's actually quite nerve wrecking standing up and talking to 20 odd five year olds, though a very rewarding feeling once you got into it.
