The Training Contract

The Training

We offer a structured programme which is run by Andrea Cohen, the firm's Training Partner and she is assisted by Fiona Lyon, Administrator.  Each trainee will normally have four, six month seats in at least three departments.  The trainees choose their seats themselves, the only restriction being whether the chosen seat is available – second year trainees get first choice.

The firm has an in-house training programme, of which more below, but our training is some 90% "doing" and it is important to stress that the seats in different divisions are the prime means by which you are trained.  We have an "open door" policy and partners and fee-earners are always happy to help and advise trainees.

Induction training

When new trainees arrive with us there is a detailed and substantial induction training programme, spread over the first few weeks.  The purpose of the induction programme is to point you in the right direction during your first nerve racking weeks at work.  We will give you lots of information about how the firm works, how to manage your workload effectively, how to operate your computer, the library, etc. and you will also meet our Managing Partner and our existing trainees over coffee and lunch on the first day.

Trainee solicitor sessions

There are regular talks and seminars specifically for trainees, usually involving a free lunch!  These might cover new developments in the law or an introduction to the work of one of our divisions by one of the partners.  Talks on advocacy, marketing and networking skills are examples of recent sessions.

Group (specialised) sessions

You will also find that you are encouraged to participate in group training sessions which occur throughout the firm.  These provide an invaluable opportunity to stretch your understanding of technical and procedural issues and to learn from discussions with your more senior colleagues.

Professional skills course

We use the College of Law in Manchester to provide us with the PSC.  The sessions are spread out over the two years of your training contract.  We give study leave for examined sections of the course.

Careers development review

Your development will be monitored regularly throughout each of your seats and you will receive a formal review with the Training Partner after three months in each seat (as well as an informal review when you have been with the firm for six weeks to see how you are getting on), although any concerns you may have can be dealt with quickly and informally as they arise.  The review is a two way process and as well as identifying any areas for improvement, provides an opportunity to discuss your objectives.  At the end of each seat, every trainee is given a formal appraisal by their supervising partner.
