Medical Negligence

Gill Edwards named lawyer of the week in The Times

Further to Lisa Hardy's blog of the 8 February we are delighted that Gill Edwards, a Partner in our clinical negligence department, has been named Lawyer of the Week in The Times this morning.  Gill has recently been successful in bringing a landmark human rights claim in the Supreme Court for the parents of Melanie Rabone, a voluntary patient who took her own life in 2005 after being discharged from  the psychiatric unit at Stepping Hill Hospital.

The victory in the Supreme Court means that the NHS owes a duty of care to all psychiatric patients whether they have been sectioned under the Mental Health Act or not.  It also allows parents of adult children to bring claims in their own right should their child die in these circumstances.

Gill's achievement is a testament to the hard work that she and all the department put in for our clients and we are pleased not only for her but for Mr and Mrs Rabone that this case has been concluded so successfully.

You can read more details about the case in our summary and you can read the judgement on the Supreme Court website.
