Shopping at your local supermarket should be an enjoyable experience. However, it can often come with hidden hazards which can cause injuries to unsuspecting customers.

Supermarkets are under a duty to ensure that visitors to their store are inherently safe on their premises. Supermarkets must ensure that any spillages, obstructions or breakages are either cleaned, removed or signposted. In addition, there must be a regular system of inspection carried out by their employees to maintain the store. Failure to do this will put visitors to the store at risk of an injury.

If you or a family member has been injured at a local supermarket and it was not your fault you may be entitled to bring a claim.

If you have an accident within a supermarket, it is important that you:

  • Report the accident to a member of staff and make sure your incident is entered into an accident book. Remember to get the name and position of the person you reported the accident to

  • Note what you slipped on or what you tripped over. Were there any warning signs in place?

  • If you have a mobile phone take a photograph of the spot where you slipped. Seek medical assistance for your injuries in order that this is recorded in your medical records

  • If there are any witnesses to the accident obtain their full contact details as you may need their assistance to verify your version of events

  • Speak to a firm of solicitors who will be able to offer you specialist advice

  • Lastly you must be aware you have three years from the date of the accident within which to bring your claim, however the sooner you bring your claim the better in order that vital evidence can be obtained and statements taken from witnesses.
