What legionellosis?

The bacteria thrive in temperatures between 20 and 45 °C and can contaminate water cooling towers, hot water systems, swimming pools, air conditioning units or anywhere where the temperature is right and they have a source of ‘food’ such as algae, rust or sludge.
What are the symptoms of legionnaires disease?
Once inhaled it can be up to two weeks before a person begins to show symptoms which include; high temperature, fever and chills, muscle pains, cough, nausea and headaches and more seriously signs of mental confusion.
Duties under the law?
Because of the seriousness of the illness that legionella bacteria causes those who manage premises with water services or wet cooling systems (i.e. water cooling towers) are subject to strict legislation controlling the management and maintenance of water systems to protect people who use that water supply from contracting the disease.
